David Letterman in Trouble? Probably Not!

So America’s snarkiest talk show host has now become the butt of other host’s jokes. I guess turnabout is fair play.

David Letterman has had to admit he bedded down an unknown number of female staffers. He came clean largely because he was the target of an alleged $2 million dollar extortion scheme concocted by Robert “Joe” Halderman, a producer at CBS. He ought to win an award for dumbest scheme in the history of criminality (if convicted, of course). It ought to be real interesting to be a part of Letterman’s studio audience as he tapes two episodes of his program Monday here in New York.

After all, he did get out in front of this whole thing on his program last week. Smart move. Now speculation centers on just who he slept with, when, and whether all this will have a lasting impact on his show and career. Trust me, the morality (or lack of same), judgment, or even policy standards David Letterman may have violated probably won’t make much of a difference in the end.

It’s commerce, people. If CBS sees a sharp drop in advertising revenue on the Letterman show because of his actions, they’ll take action against him. Otherwise, they won’t. Rest assured lots of Americans will be watching over the next few nights to see how he handles himself. Higher ratings usually mean higher revenue, which is why the cynic in me says Letterman’s home free no matter how many staffers he had sex with.

I had an on air discussion about Letterman the other night, and the question was raised whether media coverage of this affair has been overly sympathetic to him. Voyeuristic might better describe it, but it’s a legitimate question to be asked. Is the media treating this as no big deal because some of the suits making the decisions may have nailed a few interns of their own? Don’t think for a minute Letterman is unique.

And don’t think his portrayal as a benevolent stud besieged by wenches who can’t help themselves is an accident either. Mind you, not all media is guilty of this. Still, I bet you opinion in lots of newsrooms is split sharply along gender lines. And of course, there’s the 800 pound gorilla in the room.

Did any of the staffers who slept with David Letterman receive promotions, perks, or other advantages over colleagues who didn’t hop in the sack with the boss? In case people have forgotten, that’s the main reason why these things are frowned on in the first place. Maybe the shoe on that one has yet to drop.

Still, don’t shed any tears for David Letterman. My guess is he moves right along, with minimal damage to his career or legacy. After all, they laughed and applauded last week when he revealed this stuff, didn’t they?

Or am I wrong. Is David Letterman in trouble? You tell me.

How Did Phillip Garrido Keep His Secret?

The sordid story of Phillip Garrido, convicted sex offender and alleged kidnapper and rapist, boggles the mind.

Here you have a career criminal who manages to snatch an 11 year old girl off the street and hold her for 18 years! Allegedly.

And father two children by her. Allegedly.

While his wife looked on? Allegedly. As details of Garrido’s past come to light, you’ve got to wonder if any child is safe, anywhere.

It now seems the kidnapping of Jaycee Dugard was the culmination of Phillip Garrido’s long criminal career.

He and his wife managed to abduct and keep her captive while being under the “supervision” of law enforcement the whole time. His rap sheet makes you wonder how he was even walking the street in 1991.

In 1977 he was sentenced to 50 years in federal prison for kidnapping and raping a 25 year old woman, and taking her across state lines from California to Nevada.

A Nevada court sentenced him to 5 years to life in the same case.

You would think that would be that?

50 years as well as 5 to life.

Yet Phillip Garrido was paroled on the federal beef in 1988, then sent to serve the Nevada sentence. However, he was automatically eligible for parole because of the federal time he served. After four trips to the parole board, Garrido was freed in August 1988. That would be three years before he allegedly kidnapped Jaycee Dugard.

You do the maths.

Phillip Garrido served about 20% of his federal sentence. Had he done just one third of his time, he wouldn’t have been out to snatch this young girl. And all this doesn’t begin to explain how Garrido managed to keep Dugard and their two children together so well hidden. Two years after the abduction, he was jailed on a parole violation. Aside from that, the guy was a convicted sex offender. Yet it doesn’t appear that parole officials or anyone else in California found anything wrong with Phillip Dugard. Not even when a 911 call brought police to his home in 2006. That call alleged that children were living in tents behind his house.

So what do we have here? Is it that there isn’t enough money spent on supervising parolees? Is it that law enforcement didn’t dig deep enough to find the tents housing Jaycee Dugard and her kids on Phillip Garrido’s property?

The question must also be asked, what kind of monster does this to an innocent child of 11? And how do you explain to two children, ages 11 and 15, the horror that brought them into this world?

So many questions. So few answers. Do you have any?

Dead Prostitutes – Does Anyone Care? MOMS does.

So many American cities have women who, for one reason or another, live on the margins. In some cases, they are that sad combination of hooker and drug addict. They sell sex to feed their habits, or to feed their children.

In one small, North Carolina City, nine such women have vanished since 2005.

rocky mount women

Six were later found dead, murdered but so decomposed that finding a cause of death became near impossible. All of the victims were black.

The city is Rocky Mount, 60 miles northeast of Raleigh. Sadly, the story of prostitutes who die by violence is not unique to this particular place. Yet residents of Rocky Mount tell a story of alleged police inaction due largely to the lifestyles of the victims. That too is not unique. It’s almost a given that serial killers can ply their trade among prostitutes and drug addicts because it takes so long for the law to recognize what’s happening.

In the case of Rocky Mount, it wasn’t until the latest victim was discovered in June that  local and state police formed a task force, and it was last month that the FBI got involved. They won’t say if they suspect a serial killer, but an awful lot of people in Rocky Mount think its the work of one man. Keep in mind that three women have disappeared, and none of them have been found.

The issue here, beyond the tragedy of these homicides, is the value of human life. Say what we will about all being equal, we treat some as less than equal, in some cases, far less. The life of a drug addicted hooker isn’t one to envy on any level. Still, our own humanity should demand we care, especially if such women are deliberately targeted.

In a couple of cases, women who walked the streets of Rocky Mount and jumped in and our of cars with men decided it wasn’t worth the risk.

One woman who knew two of the victims has founded a group to publicize the slayings, and to search for the three women who remain missing.

The group is called Murdered or Missing Sisters or MOMS. They’ve raised awareness to the point that national media has begun to cover the story.

While that’s all well and good, one wonders if these killings would have been highlighted sooner if the women involved weren’t part of that shadow world of people living on society’s margins.

Will we ever consider that their lives mean as much as anyone else’s? You tell me.
