Can CBO News Boost the Public Option?

We’ve been hearing for quite awhile now that adding a public option to healthcare reform would break the bank. “More than a trillion dollars!!!” lawmakers screamed. And many of them were Democrats. Now comes word that a preliminary estimate from the Congressional Budget Office puts the cost of a House Democratic bill with a public option at $871 billion.

For those who like to count numbers, that’s less than the $900 billion dollar cap set by President Obama in his address to a joint session of Congress last month. But wait, there’s more good news. The Democrats’ version would also reduce the deficit in the first 10 years. The CBO report is due to drop Wednesday, and its ramifications could be far reaching. It gives House Speaker Nancy Pelosi much more ammunition in trying to get a bill with a strong public option through the House.

For reasons best known to themselves, so-called “blue dog” Democrats in the House have been arguing for the lame, government run insurance plan promoted by Republicans in both the House and Senate. Published reports say that plan won’t save as much as the one with the public option. So what will be their excuse now? Speaking of which, when will President Obama get behind the public option, for real?

We’ve said this before. Barack Obama says he favors reform with a public option. Yet he hasn’t put the full weight of his office behind it, and he lets some of his aides equivocate when asked about it. As the late Jim Morrison once opined, “The time for hesitation’s through. No time to wallow in the mire”. Let’s put this bluntly. If President Barack Obama wants to leave a lasting presidential legacy, this is it. Time to get off the dime, Mr. President. The numbers favor you, and those members of the House who have fought hard to provide adequate, affordable healthcare for all Americans.

Let the Rush Limbaughs, the Glenn Becks, the Sean Hannitys do their best. They can’t impugn the integrity of the CBO. They use numbers from the agency when it suits their purpose. Do they really want to cry socialist forever? There’s light at the end of the tunnel for the public option, but it’s not law yet. Those who favor it, and many have been doing yeoman work in their advocacy, need to raise their voices even louder.

And I’m not just talking about well known people. I’m talking about the folks who send healthcare messages in every Facebook post they make, the people who keep it alive on Twitter, the underground majority who get that this is a matter of national pride, and can’t be left to the loud, the selfish, the lawmakers whose votes are bought and paid for.

I, for one, am optimistic the public option will become law. How about you?

Kill Obama Poll on Facebook. Should Poster Go To Jail?

Yes, there was a user-generated poll on Facebook posing the question “Should Obama be killed?” Reports say a blogger at The Political Carnival noticed it, wrote about it, then alerted the Secret Service.

As of Monday, it was taken down, and yes, the Secret Service is probing just who posted it in the first place. Yet the boldness of such a question on THE most prominent social networking site Brings up a host of other questions.

Why do some people feel empowered to believe that, because they disagree with a president’s policies, he should be killed? Sure, there have always been a tiny number of people who felt this way, and an even smaller number who have acted on it. Yet what we’re seeing is something deeper and more virulent. It’s as if Barack Obama’s presence in the White House has unleashed a wellspring of pent up hatred.

This hatred, it must be said, has been fueled by the fanaticism of some right wing radio and television hosts. These folks and their supporters will adamantly deny they have any role at all in the Obama hating. Yet guns and ammunition are being purchased in record numbers, and some people are acting as though talking about killing the President of the United States is protected free speech.

These toads can say they’re entertainers, and their hatred is protected by the First Amendment. They’d be right on both counts. However, there is the small issue of acting in a responsible manner, and making your opposition clear while avoiding language that can trigger people to take violent action. Trust me, it’s not that hard to do.

Right now we don’t know who posted that assassination poll on Facebook. It could have been some bored kid, or it could have been a person with more sinister intentions. Either way, the poster used an add-on application, meaning that once it was taken down, the responses to the poll are no longer available. Despite the fact that I’m an idiot when it comes to computers, I have a feeling the Secret Service will find a way to figure out who posted it.

Which leads to the question, is the poll itself criminal? Certainly advocating that President Obama be killed is,but if whoever did this has a good lawyer, I’m sure the argument will be made that he or she wasn’t advocating anything. However, maybe that’s not the point. Why is anyone asking in a public forum whether our President should be killed? The answer to that question could go a long way toward explaining the hate that seems to flow from some at the mention of his name.

So, you tell me. Should the person who posted the poll on assassinating President Obama go to jail?

Death Panel? What Death Panel?

So now Sarah Palin, private citizen, weighs in on healthcare via (what else?) Facebook.

She calls President Obama’s healthcare reform “downright evil”, and opines it will create a “death panel” that would determine who gets access to care. Death panel indeed! Where do they get this stuff from?

In this case, Palin’s fears about her son Trig and her parents have to do with a provision in the House healthcare reform bill that would provide VOLUNTARY end of life counseling to terminally ill patients. Somehow, and no one seems to be sure exactly how, that’s been turned into euthanasia, and medicine circa 1930s Germany (I’m not making this up).

So I guess this is what Palin means by trying to “effect change” from outside her elected office. Nice try. Combine Palin’s utter nonsense (and the attention it’s getting) with the disruption of town hall meetings on healthcare reform, and you have a small but vocal segment of the American body politic trying to impose its will on the rest of us.

Their end game is to dilute reform to make it virtually unrecognizable from what we have now. Anything else, they bleat, like a public option or single payer puts us on the path to socialism. But what path does the current system put us on? Could it be something like Social Darwinism, where only the healthy survive?

Strip away all the rhetoric, and what leg do opponents of healthcare reform have to stand on? Put simply, they want no part of a system that affords the working poor access to quality care. If you make so little as to qualify under Medicaid, fine. If not, those geometric increases in the cost of health insurance premiums are on you, pal.

And who funds reform opponents? A guy named Rick Scott, the founder of “Conservatives for Patients Rights”. He also founded a hospital corporation that paid out $1.7 billion dollars to Uncle Sam for fraud. So let’s see now. We’ve got a group of vocal opponents of Obama’s healthcare plan who disrupt meetings at the behest of a failed governor and a medical fraudster. Nice.

I for one am still not ready to give up on single payer, universal care for all. I know people are saying it’s not politically feasible, people have said the same thing about other, equally worthy pieces of legislation. There’s something utterly galling about having the debate on this issue hijacked by the small, the petty, the misinformed, and the deliberately misleading.

As they say across the pond, death panel my arse. What do you think?
